Sewer Line, Cesspool & Septic in Hawaii
Recurring backups, slow main drains or soggy yard spots can point to a damaged sewer line or an overloaded cesspool. In Hawaii, cesspools also come with a state deadline, so it pays to know where yours stands.
Signs your sewer line or cesspool needs attention
Backups in the lowest drain in the house, multiple slow drains, sewage odors indoors or in the yard, soggy patches over the line, or repeated clogs after cleaning.
Hawaii's cesspool law
Under Hawaii law, new cesspools are prohibited and, per the Department of Health, every existing cesspool in the state must be upgraded to an approved septic or aerobic treatment system or connected to a sewer by January 1, 2050, unless an exemption applies.
Some situations can trigger an earlier upgrade, such as adding bedrooms or bathrooms, a cesspool that has been pumped more than twice in 12 months, or one that has spilled more than once.
The Department of Health says violations can be fined up to $60,000 per offense. Historical conversion costs have ranged from about $9,000 to $60,000 or more depending on the site and system.
Who does the work
Cesspool inspection, pumping and conversion can involve a wastewater contractor and engineer in addition to a plumber. Tell us what you need and we will work to route your request, and always verify licenses first.
