Leak Detection in Hawaii

Hidden leaks waste water and damage structure quietly. If your water bill jumped or you can hear running water when everything is off, a leak-detection visit can pinpoint it without tearing things apart.

Signs of a hidden leak

A sudden water bill increase, the sound of running water with all fixtures off, low pressure, damp flooring or walls, a musty smell, or unusually green or wet spots in the yard (which can indicate an underground leak).

Honolulu's Board of Water Supply recommends checking for leaks at least once a month and before you travel for an extended period.

A free first check you can do

Turn off every fixture and appliance, read your water meter, wait one to two hours without using water, and read it again. Movement means water is flowing somewhere. Do not open the meter box itself if it is owned by your water utility; read the meter only if it is accessible to customers.

For toilets, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait 15 to 30 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, the toilet is leaking.

Who is responsible?

On Oahu, the Board of Water Supply says it owns the service lateral through the meter box and shut-off valve, and the customer is responsible for pipes on the property side. If you are unsure which side a leak is on, ask your water utility and a licensed plumber.

Frequently asked questions

How can I check for a leak with my water meter?

Turn off all water use, note the meter reading or leak indicator, wait one to two hours, and read it again. Any change means water is moving through the system.

How do I test a toilet for a leak?

Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank after it has filled. If color appears in the bowl within 15 to 30 minutes, the toilet is leaking.
