How to Check a Hawaii Plumber's License (and What to Do If They Are Not Licensed)
Short answer: Hawaii licenses contractors through the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA). You can look up a license, its status and any discipline for free online before you hire anyone.

When a license is required
According to DCCA, a contractor's license is required for any project exceeding $1,500 in labor and materials, and for any project that requires a building, electrical or plumbing permit. Plumbing contractors must employ licensed plumbers to perform the actual plumbing work.
How to verify a license in 3 steps
- Ask the contractor for the business name and license number, and ask that it appear on the written quote.
- Search the license for free at the DCCA public license search. It shows original license date, expiration date, status and disciplinary action.
- Check complaint history and business registration through DCCA's Business Check tools. DCCA notes that licensee status and complaint history are searched separately, so use both. You can also call the Licensing and Business Registration Information Section at 844-808-3222.
Why it matters
- DCCA says a licensed contractor has workers' compensation and liability insurance, which protects you if someone is injured or something is damaged.
- A licensed contractor is able to obtain and sign building permits.
- The Contractors Recovery Fund may be available to you only if you hired a licensed contractor.
Red flags
- No license number on the quote, ad or vehicle, or a number that does not match the business name in the DCCA search.
- Pressure to pay a large amount in cash up front.
- No written, itemized quote.
Reporting unlicensed activity
DCCA says to notify the Regulated Industries Complaints Office (RICO) at 808-587-4272 or toll-free 1-844-808-3222, press 3. Keep written quotes, contracts, receipts and details of the work so RICO can investigate.
